What is Extreme Product?

Extreme Product Management (XPM) is an outcome driven framework that provides practical techniques for achieving outcomes, e.g. increasing customer satisfaction, driving usage and revenue growth. At its core, XPM is based on tenets of radical transparency, repeatable process, ownership and accountability. Just another framework? Frameworks are helpful tools that add structure to ambiguous problems. However, nothing is more important than having the right people, in the right roles, properly motivated and empowered to succeed as a team. XPM will explore the people-side of Product Management and suggest techniques to drive alignment and achieve shared goals.

XPM is focused on providing the toolset and skills to build an outcome driven Product organization. Product organizations are usually dominated by Product Managers. However, Product Managers are only successful if their teams succeed and these product or project teams are usually made up of software engineers, UX designers and other specialist roles. XPM starts with outcomes and works backwards to the process by which outcomes are achieved for the benefit of the wider organization. But what about the customer? Working backwards from the needs of your customers is at the center of any successful Product Development process. However, zoom out and you find that the customer only exists because your organization exists. Customer needs have to be met by your organization in a way that is sustainable to the long term success of your business. It is possible to deliver products and services that offer value to customers in a sustainable way but many organizations struggle with finding the right balance.

XPM will cover all aspects of the Product Management role. However, as mentioned earlier, in the real world the PM role can be played by anybody in the organization with the relevant skill set and the activities described could be split between multiple different roles in your organization. One of the challenges that XPM attempts to overcome is the siloing and friction that can result from rigid role definitions. Product Management activities are broadly speaking split into four categories. 1. Strategy - to capture the future state of a product in writing. Aka the vision, 2. Execution - aiding the execution of an inflight project, removing roadblocks, driving alignment, helping make trade-offs, 3. Operations – helping with the smooth running of the production products and service, including responding to customer questions, dealing with refunds and payments, adhoc data requests etc, 4. Go to Market (GTM) – launch activities, blog posts, speaker events and conferences.

The aim of XPM is to provide a practical framework with which to execute these core activities to achieve impactful and repeatable outcomes for your customers and your business. Take a leap and jump in.
